Aqua Vida is a hybrid enterprise that blends social purpose with business innovation. We focus on urban water. We build innovative water technologies that improve people's lives and build networks of entrepreneurs that provide solutions to water challenges in cities of the developing world. Our vision is to create a powerful enterprise capable of meeting the water challenges that lie ahead. We have global ambitions, but our current focus is on Mexico.
The Problem: Approximately 300 million people living in cities in the developing world lack access to safe drinking water. Urban populations continue to surge, and by 2050, 65% of the world’s 9 billion people will live in cities. Governments themselves cannot meet the rising demand for water, and water resources in urban areas are being depleted quickly. Aging infrastructure is crumbling, and municipal drinking water sources are contaminated. Most governments and NGOs are only applying “Band-Aid” solutions to the problem and, as a result, 50% of water projects fail within the first year and 70% fail within the first three years. A new approach is needed.
What we do: AquaVida focuses on urban water challenges by purifying and distributing water and building networks of entrepreneurs. Through our application of innovative water technologies, AquaVida provides affordable access to pure water while being environmentally responsible. Utilizing a robust supplier network, we train and develop entrepreneurs who distribute water and related products and services to businesses and people across all economic classes, including those at the base of the economic pyramid.
Why we’re effective: We see the big picture. We apply "Business DNA"--business thinking, business models and market-based approaches--to scale our impact and provide products and services that improve people’s lives. We equip our entrepreneurs with cutting-edge technology and ongoing support to create solutions that last. These entrepreneurs make personal investments in their businesses, and are thus committed to their own long-term sustainability.
How we measure our success: We gauge our success by the market acceptance of our products and services, by the livelihoods of the entrepreneurs we develop, and the stakeholders for whom we create “shared value." This includes our loyal donors who demand impact, our investors who seek above-average financial returns, and the tens of millions of people we seek to help and serve.
